Adding topics and subtopics

In Map View or Outline View, you can add topics (at the same level as the current topic) and subtopics (at the level below the current topic), using keyboard shortcuts or toolbar buttons.

To add a topic or subtopic using the Quick Add tabs:

  1. Select a topic or, callout where you would like to add a topic. The selected item displays the blue topic frame and the Quick Add tabs.

  2. Click the topic's Quick Add tab to add a parent topic, topics at the same level (siblings), or subtopics (children).

  3. Type the topic text and press Return.

Main topics have four Add Topic tabs, but the  map's Central topic only has two Add Topic tabs (right and left). Use these tabs to create new main topics.

Callouts and Floating topics only have one Add Topic Tab, which adds a subtopic.

Tip: If you are zoomed out to 50% or less, the blue topic frame and the Quick Add tabs will not be displayed.

Another way to add a topic:

  1. Select a topic and press Return, or click the New Topics toolbar button on the Home tab or the Topics toolbar button on the Insert tab, or choose Insert > Topic.

  2. Type the topic text and press Return.

New topics are added after the selected topic in clockwise order. To add a topic in reverse order, press Shift-Return or click the Insert toolbar button and choose Topic Before in the pop-up menu.

Another way to add a subtopic:

  1. Select a topic and press Command-Return, or click the New Subtopic toolbar button on the Home tab, or choose Insert > Subtopic.

  2. Type the topic text and press Return.

To add a new parent topic:

  1. Select a topic and press Shift-Command-Return, or or choose Insert > Parent Topic.

  2. Type the topic text and press Return.

Other ways to add topics:

Use the shortcut menus:

  • To add a main topic, Control-click the map background (or below the topic list in Outline View) and choose Insert Main Topic.

  • To add a parent topic, topic or subtopic Control-click a topic, and in the shortcut menu choose the topic type from the Insert submenu.

To add topics in brainstorming fashion, use the Quick Entry mode.
